From Outcrop to Reservoir Model: Bringing Field Geology into tNavigator

What happens when you take reservoir modelling software out of the office and into the field?

In a recent article in GEO EXPRO, Editor in Chief Henk Kombrink spoke to Lilly Walker about the challenges of combining fieldwork with digital model building, and why the two might be a better match than you’d expect.

Our Australian team recently joined a multidisciplinary field exercise in Australia, lead by Mark Bentley from Langdale23 and Mark Reilly from Precipice Training. The trip brought together geophysicists, petrophysicists, geologists and reservoir engineers from Santos and Rock Flow Dynamics to explore how observations made at outcrop can translate directly into digital reservoir models. Using tNavigator alongside hands-on fieldwork allowed participants to test their interpretations, explore connectivity and fluid behaviour, and see the potential impact of geological decisions on reservoir performance.

The exercise also demonstrated the value of bringing disciplines together within an integrated modelling environment. By moving between real-world geology and digital modelling, participants were encouraged to look beyond their usual areas of expertise and consider the reservoir from different perspectives – helping bridge the gap between geological interpretation, reservoir engineering and simulation.
