Rock Flow Dynamics software gift to WVU advances geoscience and energy engineering education

22nd April, 2025

Rock Flow Dynamics have made a significant contribution to West Virginia University (WVU) by donating $26.8 million worth of tNavigator software licenses. This in-kind gift is aimed at enhancing the educational and research capabilities of students and faculty in geoscience and energy engineering disciplines.

The tNavigator software, developed by RFD, is a state-of-the-art reservoir modelling and simulation platform. It offers advanced tools for geoscience, reservoir, and production engineering, enabling users to model and interpret subsurface environments effectively. This technology is crucial for students pursuing careers in earth and environmental science, geology, and petroleum engineering, as it provides real-world applications that enrich their academic experience and improve their employment propects.

The majority of the software licenses are allocated to the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, with the remainder designated for the Department of Geology and Geography within the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. This distribution ensures that a broad range of students and faculty across related disciplines can benefit from the software.

To facilitate the effective use of tNavigator, RFD personnel conducted a two-day training session on the WVU campus. This training aimed to equip faculty and students with the necessary skills to utilise the software’s full capabilities in their research and coursework.

The donation was made through the WVU Foundation, the nonprofit organization responsible for receiving and administering private donations on behalf of the university. This partnership between RFD and WVU exemplifies a collaborative effort to advance education and research in energy-related fields, preparing students to tackle complex challenges in the energy sector.
