Overview of Role
Rock Flow Dynamics is seeking an experienced Reservoir Engineer based in Venezuela to provide independent consulting services as part of its technical support network. The engagement focuses on dynamic reservoir simulation with a significant client support and training component. The selected consultant will have strong knowledge of reservoir engineering fundamentals, simulation workflows, and history matching, and will work closely with clients to understand their specific needs and provide tailored software demonstrations, technical support, and training in tNavigator to ensure an excellent user experience.
Client scope: This role will support private-sector oil and gas companies operating in Venezuela under the evolving 2026 hydrocarbons framework.
The focus will be on approved, sanctions-compliant clients and projects, with all activities undertaken in accordance with applicable international regulations and RFD’s compliance requirements. The role is not intended to provide services to companies under international sanctions.
Scope of Services
- Provide reservoir simulation support and software evaluation services for approved private-sector clients in Venezuela, both remotely and onsite.
- Participate in presales meetings as requested by RFD, delivering demonstrations of tNavigator, RFD’s integrated static and dynamic modelling and simulation platform.
- Build, initialise, and history match dynamic simulation models; advise clients on best practice for model QC, forecasting, and development scenario evaluation.
- Proactively identify and scope technical solutions that address client requirements, ensuring the delivery of appropriate technical support.
- Deliver training sessions to clients and, where agreed under the consultancy agreement, to RFD personnel.
- Attend conferences, industry events, and exhibitions in the region on behalf of RFD as mutually agreed in writing.
- Where opportunities arise in the course of providing services, notify RFD of potential business development opportunities with private-sector operators.
- Confirm the identity and ownership of each prospective client with RFD before commencing work, and escalate immediately any request that may involve a state-owned or state-controlled entity.
Skills and Knowledge
Required: Dynamic Reservoir Simulation (core focus):
- Strong knowledge of reservoir simulation tools (e.g. tNavigator, Eclipse, CMG, INTERSECT).
- Solid understanding of black-oil and compositional simulation, model initialisation (equilibration, fluid contacts, capillary pressure / J-function), and aquifer modelling.
- History matching experience, including production data reconciliation, BHP/rate constraints, and assisted or AI-supported workflows.
- Knowledge of well modelling: IPR/VLP, VFP tables, artificial lift (ESP/gas lift), and nodal analysis.
- Understanding of SCAL and PVT data handling, relative permeability and hysteresis, and upscaling from static models.
Required: Field Development and Forecasting (secondary focus):
- Production forecasting, decline curve analysis, and development scenario screening.
- Familiarity with waterflood and IOR/EOR screening concepts for heavy and medium crude assets.
- Understanding of uncertainty analysis workflows (multiple realisations, scenario modelling, sensitivities).
Required: General:
- Excellent client-facing and internal communication skills, with great attention to detail.
- Fluency in Spanish and English, both written and spoken.
- Strong ability to prioritise tasks to maintain excellent customer satisfaction.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and effective both independently and in team environments.
- Willingness to comply with RFD’s compliance, sanctions screening, and client acceptance procedures, including verification of the ownership of client entities.
Desirable:
- Experience with Venezuelan reservoirs, including Orinoco Belt heavy oil, foamy oil behaviour, and thermal recovery concepts.
- Familiarity with static modelling tools (e.g. Petrel, RMS) and geology-to-simulation handover.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python for workflow automation.
- Experience delivering technical training or working in a software support / technical sales environment.
Education and Experience
Required:
- MSc degree in Petroleum, Reservoir, or Chemical Engineering, or a similar discipline (or BSc with equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of experience as a Reservoir or Simulation Engineer with hands-on dynamic modelling experience.
Desirable:
Understanding of the full end-to-end subsurface workflow, from static model handover through initialisation, history matching, forecasting, and uncertainty assessment.
Engagement Structure and Compliance
This is an independent contractor opportunity and does not constitute employment with RFD. The successful candidate will provide services under a written consultancy agreement and will be responsible for their own tax, social security and other obligations arising from their independent contractor status.
All work will be limited to RFD-approved private-sector clients and projects and will be subject to RFD’s applicable sanctions, export-control, compliance and data-security requirements.
