Do the names ECLIPSE, MORE, IMEX, GEM, STARS or RESCUE sound familiar? Of course they do. They’re black oil, compositional and thermal compositional reservoir simulators sold by the big names in the industry, and all of them have been in use for a long time.
In fact, many of the algorithms for the well-known reservoir simulation software used today were written over 30 years ago for the computer architectures of that time. That software can’t take advantage of the modern parallel computing power we have at our fingertips today.
Some of the original developers of these legacy reservoir simulation products have moved on, but the companies that acquired their assets have been offering program upgrades piecemeal when needed or requested by (what seems to be) a captive market.
The real issue is, troublesome as they may be, these “old” simulators are familiar to most engineers. They’ve been adequate at doing the basic reservoir modeling jobs most companies need to get done, so people have settled for using what they know. Too bad that finding and moving data from one place to another can be a real pain. Too bad a lot of that data is ancient, hand-written, not detailed enough and just plain wrong. Too bad you may have a bunch of different interfaces to learn. And too bad your data’s fidelity suffered dramatically when data transfer protocols were lax and resulted in numerous errors you had to correct. And you didn’t discover them until it was too late.
To top it off, all these legacy simulation packages are labor-intensive to use, take way too much time to run, tie up too many resources and are downright expensive to lease and maintain!
